What is a Pixel Laser?

Pixel Erbium YAG Laser is an FDA approved laser that uses “fractional ablative skin resurfacing” as opposed to complete ablative skin resurfacing. What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means we don’t remove the entire top layer of the skin, but rather only a few “plugs” in the surface. That translates into less discomfort, less downtime, and faster healing. Improvement in the skin occurs in a two-fold process as the laser removes damaged tissue at the surface of the skin and also generates heat below within the dermis to stimulate collagen. When the laser fires onto the skin a tiny dotted matrix pattern appears. Everywhere a dot appears is where tissue has been removed. This is a controlled micro injury that stimulates collagen during the repair process. The remaining tissue surrounding the ablated areas allow for rapid healing time (7 day period) by creating a reservoir for new tissue growth.

What does the treatment entail?

The client experiences warmth during the treatment and a “sunburn” like effect for 24 hours. Topical anesthesia is not generally necessary, but if a client elects to have a more aggressive Pixel, a topical anesthetic is applied before leaving the office. As new epidermal skin replaces the old, the repair process gives the client a bronze appearance over the next several days. The texture of the old skin will become slightly rough before flaking off on day 3 to 5. Healing is complete within 7 to 10 days.
