Tattoo Removal
Almost 25% of adults age 18 to 50 in the United States currently have a tattoo, and almost 20 % of those would like to remove it. This is according to a study published in the June 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Still others would like to change their tattoo. Alma Lasers currently manufactures a Q- Switched laser which effectively removes black& blue tattoo pigments, and even a wider range of tattoo colors, such as yellow. It is also extremely effective at removing pigmented lesions such as age spots, sun spots and freckles. Currently, there are few options for people who want to get rid of their tattoos. Other techniques such as dermabrasion, cryosurgery and excision are extremely invasive and usually result in scarring. By contrast, laser tattoo removal represents a more effective method of tattoo removal because of its effectiveness and low risk of scarring.
How is a tattoo removed?
The laser removes tattoos by penetrating the skin with laser light energy and fragmenting the tattoo pigment. Once the tattoo ink is broken up, the tiny particles of tattoo ink are removed from the skin by the body's normal processes. Treatments are quick and can easily be performed during a lunch break. While multiple treatments are usually required to remove a tattoo, treatment times will vary depending on the size and color of the tattoo.
How Painful is it?
There is less pain involved with the removal of a tattoo than the application of one. The impact of the pulse of light is similar to the snap of a rubber band. Some clients tolerate the procedure with no anesthesia, while others may require a local injection to minimize discomfort. Cold air or an ice pack may also be used for comfort as needed.
What will the tattoo look like post treatment?
Immediately after the laser treatment, your tattoo may have a white discoloration and the area around the tattoo may be slightly swollen and red. You might have a sensation of a sunburn at the treatment area. The appearance of the tattoo will loose it’s sharpness for about 2-3 weeks while it is fading. The tattoo will be covered with antibacterial ointment and a nonstick bandage. The tattoo should be kept clean and will heal over the next month. You can return for another appointment as soon as the area has healed. An average of 6 to 10 appointments may be necessary to completely remove the tattoo.
